An angry employee opens fire indiscriminately at a municipal building in Virginia Beach on Friday. Twelve (12) persons were confirmed dead after the terrified co-workers scrambled for cover before police shot and killed the culprit.
Before then, twelve (12) of his colleagues were already down and six (6) others including a police officer whose bulletproof vest saved sustained injury. Hence was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Bobby Dyer, a mayor described it as “the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach.”
According to the police chief, James Cervera, the shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. when the veteran employee of the Public Utilities Department stepped into the building at the city’s Municipal Center. He did not release the suspect’s name.
The initial report by the police said the gunman shot and killed eleven (11) persons but Cervera later revealed that one more died on the way to the hospital.
The incident pushed shock waves through Virginia Beach, the state’s largest vacation spot and city in southeastern Virginia. The building of attack was situated in a suburban complex miles away from the high-rise hotels along the beach and the downtown business area.
