The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA has shared alleged expired rice donated by the Chinese Government to its staffs. According to a source in NEMA, the disbursement commenced from Sunday to Monday. Staffs of different departments were directed to part with its own share. I wonder why expired rice should be shared among NEMA staffs that have suffered for the organization. Moreover, for months there has been controversy over the inexplicable non-disbursement of rice donated by the Chinese Government to persons in IDP camps in Nigeria.
“Items have been moved from a hidden warehouse on a Hilux to Abuja NEMA agency’s head office located in Wuse 2 district Abuja, source revealed. “The expired rice and other items were shared based on staffs grade level”. “Items given to workers are the rice, pasta and oil which workers confirmed to be expired or sub-standard”. “Two senior Human Resources Management staffs of the commission were in charge of the sharing”. “Besides, some other items have reportedly been delivered to Minna operations office Niger state, Kaduna zonal office, Kano operations office, and Jos zonal office”.
Though, the commission sees it as a way of helping NEMA staffs this yuletide season. But the big question is “why must it be expired rice..?. But, I believe investigations are still on-going concerning the issue. Let’s watch as things unfolds.
Will be good to recall, that the NEMA boss, Maihaja, was indicted last month by the House of Representatives over diversion of the sum of N33 billion intervention fund meant for the North East. Moreover, another source disclosed that recently, agency’s store officers from the states had meeting with DG. They were directed to sign papers purportedly receiving the expired/wasted and diverted rice. Another set of the Chinese donated rice was also discovered hidden in a warehouse in Lagos.
