In a video that has gone viral, Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Mbaka Ejike embarrassed the vice presidential candidate of PDP, Peter Obi. During a church Service, he said that Obi and Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid would end in shame if they continued on the same trajectory.
However, the Catholic Church has withdrawn itself from the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Mbaka, over his perceived statements.
Mbaka who spoke to Peter Obi in the Igbo language said;
Watch the video below;
“As you are in the presence of these children of God, tell God what you will do for Him, or you don’t want to do something for God…
“In fear, I believe, but this is a political statement. God detests stinginess. What am saying is not for your pleasure. What am saying will save your life, otherwise, you and Atiku will fail. The way both of you are moving will end in shame.”
Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, while speaking in an exclusive interview with PUNCH, reacting to Mbaka’s comments, distanced the Catholic family from the cleric’s politically charged statements.
Achi who disclosed that the diocese was’nt in support of Mbaka’s remarks. He noted that it was wrong for priests to make such statements from the pulpit.
However, when asked if Mbaka was still a member of the diocese, Achi said: “He is”, adding that the diocese is not in support of any priest making political statements.
“We are not supposed to make any political statements from the pulpit, during church Service”. He said.
Moreover, a document was issued by the Bishops’ Conference to that effect”. So, he spoke on his own, not on behalf of the diocese.”
As a Clergy, “we are not supposed to come out openly to support a particular candidate for any reason”. The church law does not support such a thing. So, it would be very wrong for a priest to come out and give an endorsement to a particular candidate.”
