Policeman Shot A Commercial Driver: Mr Ezeme Udoka was reportedly shot by a happy trigger policeman at about 1.30 pm yesterday at a police checkpoint. It was gathered that the victim was accosted by some policemen at the checkpoint while he was picking passengers from Mgbakwu to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University NAU temporary site.
The policeman whose name was not revealed has been arrested for allegedly shooting the driver over fifty naira (N50 bribe). The incident was said to have occurred in Isuaniocha, Awka North Local Government Area of the state. An eyewitness Mr Ezeme Emmanuel, said one of the officers at the checkpoint shot the driver after he parked by the roadside to answer their interrogation instead of parting with fifty naira (N50).
According to the eyewitness. “The policemen afterwards jumped into their van and zoomed off, abandoned the young man in a pool of blood.” The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but refused to be attended to as the hospital authorities requested a police report. An action that triggered protest.
The victim, Udoka, who narrowly survived, said he had no altercation with the policemen which could have led to the shooting. Udoka demanded proper investigation into the matter in order to bring the culprit to book and serve as a deterrent to other trigger happy officers.
The State Police, Spokesman, Mohammed Haruna, has confirmed the incident and the arrest of the Trigger happy policeman.
Moreover, the state Commissioner for Police, Mr Umar Garba\, has ordered a discreet investigation to ascertain the scenario surrounding the incident..
